Is SEO a scam?

I’ve had enough with the spam emails from companies promising to boost my Google ranking or get your website to page one overnight. It’s the quickest way for me to shut my laptop and go make a coffee.I’m so bored filtering out these emails, and even when I ignore them, they try to circle back with another pitch. SEO itself is a legitimate and essential part of any digital strategy but most of the unsolicited emails I get are low-quality outreach at best and potentially harmful at worst.
Many of these messages come from agencies using automated systems to scrape websites and directories for business emails. They send generic, templated pitches to hundreds or even thousands of recipients, rarely taking the time to understand your business or your audience. They sell cheap, cookie-cutter packages that promise incredible results but cannot really deliver. From a PR perspective, engaging with such companies can be risky because your brand’s reputation and online visibility are at stake.
Legitimate SEO agencies operate differently. They focus on building trust and demonstrating expertise. They provide measurable outcomes, transparent pricing, and clear strategies, often starting with a free consultation or audit. They can show case studies and client references to prove their credibility. The approach is strategic, ethical, and designed to protect your brand. Basically everything that a responsible PR professional would want.
This brings us to the concept of white-hat SEO, which is simply SEO done the right way. White-hat SEO follows Google’s guidelines and ethical standards. It focuses on creating high-quality, valuable content, using keywords naturally, optimizing your website for speed and mobile friendliness, earning backlinks from reputable sources, and providing a positive user experience. The goal is sustainable growth that enhances your brand, rather than short-term tricks that might backfire.
Really though, you can do SEO yourself. For small businesses or personal brands, DIY SEO is not only possible, it can be highly effective. You can create blog posts and guides that answer your audience’s questions, use keyword research tools to identify what people are searching for, optimize your website structure and images, and even build backlinks through genuine collaborations. Free tools like Google Analytics and Search Console let you track results and fine-tune your approach.
From a PR perspective, the key is to focus on quality over quantity. Don’t be lured by generic cold emails promising overnight success. Protect your brand by choosing ethical SEO practices, whether through a reputable agency or your own efforts. And while filtering out those endless SEO pitches can be   downright annoying, it’s a reminder of how crowded the digital space has become and how important it is to work strategically to stand out.
In the end, SEO isn’t a scam, but choosing the wrong partner can hurt your visibility and credibility. By focusing on white-hat strategies and taking control of your content, you can grow your online presence safely, authentically, and effectively.
